How to calculate GST Calculator

Step-by-step Guide & Informational Intent

  1. 1.Enter the 'Base Amount' of the product or service.
  2. 2.Select the applicable 'GST Rate' from the standard slabs.
  3. 3.Choose whether you want to Add GST to the base or Remove GST from a total price.
  4. 4.View the instant results showing the tax amount and total gross price.
  5. 5.Copy the breakdown for your invoices or accounting records.

How the Calculation Works

GST Amount = (Original Cost × GST %) / 100

For adding GST, we use: Total = Base + (Base * Rate/100). For removing GST (Reverse), we use: Base = Total / (1 + Rate/100). The tax is then split 50/50 between CGST and SGST for local sales.

Important Assumptions

  • Current Indian GST slabs are applied
  • CGST + SGST split is default for intra-state
  • IGST is equal to the full tax rate for inter-state
  • Rounding is done to the nearest paise

Goods and Services Tax (GST) is an indirect tax that replaced many other taxes like VAT, Service Tax, and Excise Duty. It aims to simplify the tax structure in India and prevent the 'cascading effect' of taxes, theoretically lowering prices for consumers over time.
Currently, items in India are taxed under four major slabs: 5%, 12%, 18%, and 28%. Basic necessities often attract 0% or 5%, while luxury goods and services usually fall under the 28% bracket, sometimes with an additional cess.
For intra-state transactions (within the same state), both Central GST (CGST) and State GST (SGST) are applied. For inter-state transactions (between two states), a single Integrated GST (IGST) is applied, which is collected by the Central Government.
Businesses with an annual turnover exceeding ₹40 Lakh (for goods) or ₹20 Lakh (for services) must register. These limits are lower (₹10-20 Lakh) for North-Eastern and hilly states.
To add GST: Original Price x (GST Rate / 100). To find it from an inclusive price: Total Price - [Total Price / (1 + GST rate/100)]. Our calculator handles both scenarios instantly.
It's a simpler scheme for small Indian businesses with turnover up to ₹1.5 Crore. They pay a flat GST rate on their turnover and have fewer compliance requirements, but they cannot claim Input Tax Credit (ITC).
